YSM Program Components
> Scientific sessions
The session program is structured around the Foci and Cross-cutting Themes (CCTs) that constitute the PAGES Science Structure. There will be poster and oral presentations.
> Professional skill development
There will be discourses on topics relevant to early career researchers. These will include
- The Art of Reviewing (Alicia Newton from Nature Geoscience, among others)
- The Art of Communicating Science (Gavin Schmidt from NASA GISS and RealClimate.org)
- The Art of Sharing Data (David Anderson from the NOAA paleoclimate datacenter)
> Peer Feedback
A system will be set up where participants provide friendly and constructive feedback on each others' presentations.
> Breakout discussions
Participants will discuss and develop strategies on specific topics (see below) in small groups, under moderation of a senior scientist. The outcome of the discussion will be presented to the plenary and prepared for publication in the PAGES newsletter.
Breakout topics:
A) What should the research questions and priorities in paleoscience be for the next 10 years?
B) Advocate for the relevance and importance of paleo-research to a funding agency or a policy maker.
C) Develop better strategies to communicate paleoscience to a non-academic audience.
D) What are the key educational ingredients that will ensure the success of the next generation of paleoscientists?
> Publication Opportunity
YSM participants will be offered the opportunity to publish their work in a special issue either as proceedings in IOP (as in previous YSM) or as full papers in Climate of the Past. Some YSM participants will be given the opportunity to join the team of co-guest editors for the special issue.
> Social Activities
An icebreaker reception on the evening befor the start of the YSM and a dinner on boat in the evening of the 1st YSM day will be held to promote interaction and take in the local ambience.
