YSM01: Climate system dynamics
This session invites research aiming for a more complete understanding of Earth’s climate system, at spatial scales from regional and global, and on timescales ranging from sub-annual to millennial. We seek contributions encompassing observational, theoretical, and modeling studies of various aspects of climate system dynamics. We particularly welcome contributions seeking to advance our understanding of the climate of the past 2000 years, including studies using novel analytical or numerical methods to understand changes in external forcings, internal feedbacks (e.g. changes in oceanic and atmospheric circulation), teleconnections, and regional climatic responses to these changes. This session also aims to promote data-model comparison and integration.
YSM02: Biosphere and ecosystem dynamics
This session is dedicated to diagnosing the behavior of both terrestrial and marine ecosystems in different timescales and their interaction with global change. In particular, we invite presentations contributing to the analysis of regional or local biosphere responses to climate and other environmental changes, and to the role of such responses for ecosystem, biodiversity and/or societal dynamics. Contributions on global interactions and biogeochemical exchanges between the biosphere and the environment (e.g. atmosphere, soils, oceans) as well as ecosystem responses to natural or anthropogenic disturbance are very welcome.
YSM03: Anthroposphere dynamics
The anthroposphere or technosphere refers to Earth systems that are directly shaped or made by humans, including human habitats, resources reservoirs (e.g. for mining, fishing, etc.) and all landscapes built by human practices. This session covers past, present, and future human geography, i.e. the evolution of anthropized ecosystems from hunter-fisher-gatherer to industrial-numerical societies. We invite contributions investigating the roots and dimensions of the Anthropocene at various temporal and spatial scales, and analyzing the drivers behind these transformations, such as economy, demography, ecological resources, and technological changes. Studies on anthroposystem modeling, human-nature system integration and functioning, and the (un-)sustainability of such anthroposystems are particularly encouraged.
YSM04: Human-Climate-Ecosystem interactions
This session is dedicated to assess Human-Climate-Ecosystem interactions. They include both the human impacts on ecosystems functioning and their long-term trajectory, and on climate at local, regional and global scales. These interactions also involve the impact of ‘natural’ forces on societies and their development through time. In particular, this session invites papers focusing on the mechanisms that may explain causal links and feedback loops between the biosphere, the climate, and the societies and their co-evolution at various timescales. Local studies and regional or global synthesis based both on paleo and modeled data are welcome. The multiproxy and multidisciplinary approaches are strongly encouraged.
YSM05: Abrupt changes and threshold responses
The paleoclimate record has many examples of abrupt changes to climate and ecosystems, many of which appear to be threshold responses to change. This session will focus on abrupt changes and thresholds in the Earth system. We invite studies of geological, chemical, and biological records that capture large scale, abrupt shifts in environmental and climate systems. Data and modeling studies that help us understand the processes and underlying mechanisms of change are particularly encouraged.
